Dalgona Candy Recipe
Hi Everyone, I love all things Dalgona as evidenced by my many Dalgona-related recipes posts (see them linked below), so naturally, I have to share about Dalgona candy!
This recipe is so easy with only 2, yes 2 ingredients – oh, do I love an easy recipe!
This Dalgona candy recipe is vegan and gluten-free.
Dalgona Candy on the Netflix show, “Squid Game”
This is the exact honeycomb toffee candy that was featured in the 2nd game, in the show, “Squid Game” streaming on Netflix.
In the show, the contestants chose a shape that came in round tins with the candy inside, and also inside is a needle.
The options were a circle, triangle, start, and umbrella. The umbrella shape being the most difficult to free.
They used the needle to free the shape inside the candy/cookie as a whole with the idea being that they could not crack or break the shape inside.
How is Dalgona Candy made?
It is made by heating 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar in a small metal ladle or pan and then baking soda is added to make it bubble up and then it is poured over a non-stick surface and then pressed flat and then using a cookie-cutter, it is pressed (but not all the way through).
A needle (I use a heavy-duty quilting needle) is used to “free” the shape but the idea is that you can not crack the shape or else you lose the game!
What does Dalgona candy taste like? What is it like?
It tastes like toffee, sugary, sweet, slightly caramelized.
It’s thin and crisp.
Why is it called “honeycomb toffee?”
It is called, “honeycomb toffee,” because when you add the baking soda to the melted, cooking sugar, it bubbles up, giving it a “honeycomb” structure that it keeps after it is pressed and cooled, hence, the name “honeycomb toffee,” or “honeycomb.”
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar (you can substitute the same amount brown sugar)
- 1/8 teaspoon (1 pinch of baking soda)
- canola cooking spray (or other type of neutral-tasting oil, like vegetable oil)
Kitchen Tools
There are Dalgona Candy kits available (I linked to one below in the recipe card, affiliate link) but if you don’t have a kit you can just use familiar kitchen tools that you probably already have!
- a metal ladle or a stainless steel 1-cup measure
- 1 tablespoon measure
- 1 chopstick (preferably wooden)
- oven mitt
- silicone baking mat
- bowl or plate with an underside lip that is 4 1/2-5-inches in diameter (for pressing the candy before putting the cookie cutter shape in it)
- cookie cutters (if you want to do the ones from squid game, you will need a circle, triangle, star and an umbrella)
Recipe Notes
- You have to be able to work quickly because once the sugar starts melting, it melts fast and you do not want it to burn.
- If the sugar burns then the batch will taste burnt and it will need to be scraped and you will need to wash all the tools and start over.
What’s the difference between Honeycomb Toffee Dalgona Candy and Dalgona Coffee?
They are entirely different things.
First off, Honeycomb Toffee Dalgona Candy is a hard, toffee candy and Dalgona Coffee is a whipped coffee sweet drink.
They are made differently and have different ingredients.

Instructions
- Using the cooking spray, spray the silicone baking mat and the 4 1/5-5-inch bottom of a bowl or plate. (This allows you to easily remove the candy when it is cooked.)
- On the stovetop, over medium-hight heat, add 2 tablespoons of granulated white sugar in a small metal ladle or pan (use an oven mitt, so you don't burn your hand), stirring constantly until the sugar is melted, this should take less than a minute. Do not let the sugar burn! If it starts, you need to remove it from the heat.
- Then add a pinch of baking soda is to make it bubble up, mix it in completely, and then pour it over a non-stick surface, wait a moment until it is dry enough to tap with your finger.
- Press it flat with the bowl or plate and then using a cookie-cutter, it is pressed (but not all the way through).
- A needle (I use a heavy-duty quilting/leatherworking needle) is used to “free” the shape but the idea is that you can not crack the shape or else you lose the game!
